Year 4/5 - 2016/17
We have a very exciting start to the term!
Our overall topic this term is ‘People and The Past’. In Years 4 and 5 we will be focusing on Brazil. We will know about the lives and events of significant people in the past and identify differences between our lives and those of people who have lived in the past.
In Literacy we will be focussing on the book ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan. This is a beautiful picture book which shows the journey and experiences a family has to take when they are forced to flee their home. We are very fortunate to be working with The Lyric Theatre with this project. We will be writing play scripts and performing these play scripts to other classes and parents! Watch out for the upcoming photographs! We will also be developing our drama skills, exploring the illustrations as well as doing lots of speaking and listening sessions. In terms of our writing, we will be writing play scripts, letters, setting descriptions, stories and instruction manuals.
In Maths, we are using ‘Maths Mastery’ to teach the children. This is an engaging and accessible style of mathematics teaching, inspired by Singapore and Shanghai. Our approach enhances mathematical understanding, enjoyment and achievement for every child. We will develop and master our skills based on ‘Area’. We will then focus our work on developing our skills using ‘Fractions’.
Our Science topic this term is ‘Forces’. The children will:
- Explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object.
- Identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces.
- Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
- Our previous learning in Science was ‘Earth and Space’. We loved learning about space! Here are some photographs that show our understanding of the Solar System!
