Year 1 - 2017/18

'A warm welcome from the Whole Year 1 team!  It has been a great start to the academic year and the class seem to have settled very quickly, with the children responding well to their new teachers and teaching assistants. We are looking forward to a year of developing as reflective, visible learners and having lots of fun along the way!

Year 1 Team: The Year 1 teachers are Ms Malik and Miss Toussaint. The support staff are Margaret and Ashley.

Morning drop-off expectations

Please ensure that you say goodbye to your child before they come in to the classroom in the morning. We are trying to foster the children's growing independence so they are expected to enter the classroom by themselves, hang up their coat and place their snack and drink in the appropriate places before beginning their day.

Reading

Please try to hear your children read daily and record it in their reading record book. It is important to check that, as well as becoming more fluent, the children understand what they are reading, especially as they begin to read longer and more complex books. This can be done by discussing the book afterwards, or during reading. Talk about the characters, setting or main events.

It is important that your child has their reading record in school every day as we are encouraging the children to keep a simple record of their reading and to talk to us about the reading they do at home. We have reading time every day, and during the course of the week, children will read independently, with a partner or group and with an adult. Children are welcome to bring their own reading book from home as long as it is of an appropriate level for them to read and enjoy independently.

Mental Maths

This term we will also be focusing on quick recall of number facts. The children should regularly practise their times tables at home, beginning with counting in 2, 5 and 10s. They should also be confident with pairs of numbers that total 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and their number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. Please help them to see the patterns (e.g. 3 + 7 = 10, 13 + 7 = 20, 30 + 70 =100).  

Home Learning

Alongside their weekly reading and spelling homework they will be expected to complete some extended research work linked to our topic Dreams. The children are required to spend time researching their chosen task and will be asked to present their work in class when they have completed it. They must complete 2 tasks from the grid each week which they hand in on Wednesdays. This will be marked and handed back on Friday.

Spellings

Spellings will be sent home once a week, usually on a Wednesday, and be tested the following Wednesday. They are based on spelling patterns that we have investigated in class during phonics lessons and children should be encouraged to look at the way the pattern fits into the word to help them remember it.

PE

Our PE days Monday and Tuesday.
